Google has officially unveiled the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, and after months of speculation, the verdict is in: The Pixel 3 XL features a gigantic notch that houses two cameras, one regular selfie camera and one wide-angle camera plus stereo speakers.
For months, the tech community was hopeful that Google was orchestrating leaks to make us believe the leaked Pixel 3 XL was the actual phone, but that behind the scenes the notch was not going to be there. But it is, and many people feel it’s a deal breaker, especially at the suggested retail price (USD 999 with 128 GB of memory).
But there are also a few good things about the new phones.
Both devices have dual speakers and dual cameras on the front. The cameras are both 8 MP, but one of them is a wide-angle camera as mentioned above. Both phones are made of glass, enabling wireless charging for the first time on a Google phone. The design is elegant and simple but in true 2018 fashion, there are no 3.5mm headphone jacks to be seen, but Google has the decency to include the necessary adapters in the box to connect your own headphones. Learn from that Apple.
The screen size then: The Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch, flexible OLED screen, while the Pixel 3 XL goes up to a 6.3-inch edge to edge screen.
Under the hood we the new phones live up to the expectations: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB of ram, 64 or 128 GB of ram depending on your chosen configuration and a 2,915mAh or 3,400mAh for the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL respectively.
Google is strongly pushing AI (artificial intelligence) on these new phones. An example of this is “Top shot’, a camera feature that chooses the best moment to take a picture using artificial intelligence. The camera also has tech onboard to improve zooming and to improve picture quality in low light situations.
Finally, both phones come in 3 new colors, each with frivolous names: Just Black, Clearly White and Not Pink.
