IN SHORT

Power banks come in all shapes and sizes, and Belkin has just announced one with an integrated Lightning port. This means that you can use the same cable to charge your iPhone or iPad to charge the power bank itself, thus limiting the number of cables you need to carry around.

Belkin didn’t just slap a lightning port on this power bank and called it a day. They went through the MFI certification process to ensure it will play nice with Apple gear Which is quite important because you will be only buying this one if you are an Apple user.

The BOOST CHARGE power bank has a 10,000mAh capacity, which is certainly enough to charge your iPhone (even the X model) a few times over. There are also two additional USB ports included, so you can charge additional (non-Apple) devices if necessary.

10,000mAh power banks tend to be large and bulky, and the BOOST CHARGE is no exception. Measuring 6 inches in length, 2.75 inches wide, and less than 0.75 inches thick, it’s not exceptionally large compared to other power banks of this capacity, but you will notice the thickness if you try to carry it around in your pocket. It weighs around 8 ounces which is acceptable considering the capacity.

Finally, the BOOST CHARGE has 4 LEDs indicating the power status. I always prefer a small LCD screen indicating actual percentages, but this will do nicely as well.

So is it a good move by Belkin to bring out a power bank with a lightning port? Yes and no. For Apple users, this is a perfect fit, since it truly reduces the number of cables to own/carry around.

On the other hand, if Apple drops lightning altogether in favor of USB-C, your shiny new power bank could become obsolete in very little time. This is a gamble Belkin is taking and only time will tell if it will pay off.
